Living With Less: The 606 Universal Shelving System

Designed in 1960 and still in production. The 606 Universal Shelving System was built to be repaired, reconfigured, and taken with you — a quiet rejection of disposable culture.

Dieter Rams designed the 606 for Vitsoe with a simple premise: a shelving system should adapt to your life, not the other way around. The aluminium uprights mount to any wall. The shelves, cabinets, and desk surfaces clip on without tools and can be rearranged at will.

Vitsoe still manufactures the 606 to Rams's original specifications. They offer a planning service, deliver and install it themselves, and will buy back units that are no longer needed. It is perhaps the purest commercial expression of Rams's tenth principle: as little design as possible.
